Games suggested so far:
1. Troika - a rules light science fantasy game that could be described as weird adventures in a magical multiverse - inspired by The Book of The New Sun, and the Planescape/Spelljammer settings for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.
2. Old School Essentials - Basic D&D - simple rules, Procedural dungeon crawling with combat as a dangerous last resort. I'd run this as a sandbox game allowing players to explore and set their own goals. Think of Old School Essentials brand of dungeon crawling more like a heist than a confrontation.
3. Call of Cthulhu - A game of investigative horror, where players investigate, do research, and run away from terrible things. The default setting for the game is the 1920s, but it can be adapted to other time periods. Your characters will be very normal in this game.
4. Night's Black Agents - A horror-thriller game in which players are burned/disavowed spies unraveling a vampiric conspiracy in modern Europe
5. Dungeon Crawl Classics - A modern spin on old-school gaming which attempts to mimic tropes found in pulp fantasy literature (I run this game regularly at conventions and am an old hand by now.)
6. Star Trek Adventures - A modern, well designed treatment of Star Trek as a roleplaying game.. There's a lot going on in the rules to create the sort of cooperation you see in episodes of the television show.
7. Any suggestion, so long as there is a relatively low barrier to entry.
